Westinghouse WGen7500 Generator Review

For quite some time, getting a large generator meant purchasing an incredibly expensive commercial-grade unit that took a forklift to move and a mechanical engineering degree to operate. Luckily, there are a lot more options available for anyone needing a high-capacity generator at a great price.

The Westinghouse wGen7500 is a model that makes it clear why Westinghouse is quickly becoming the winner of countless reviews. For anyone needing a generator to power a large RV, a construction site, or even as a home backup during storms, the Westinghouse 7500 is an easy choice.

Here’s what we found in my Westinghouse WGen7500 portable generator review.

Key Features

I have reviewed more generators than I can remember, and I’ve developed a strong opinion about what makes a good generator and what makes for a disappointment. It is rare for a generator to tick all of the boxes in the list of my positive, but the WGen 7500 comes close.

Let’s look at some of the features that make the Westinghouse generator WGen7500 such a winner.

WGen7500 Portable Generator by Westinghouse

Wide Variety of Ports

It is surprising how often even high-end generators simply fail to include enough outlets on the front of the unit. They will either have too few outlets or simply the wrong variety. In contrast, it is clear that they did their research with the Westinghouse generator 7500

It has four 15-amp outlets, a 30-amp port for welding or RV’s, a 12v charging port, and a grounding pin.

Large Fuel Tank Capacity

It’s common for manufacturers to skimp on fuel tank capacity. This may seem like a trivial matter, but when you have to wake up at three in the morning to keep the power running, it can make a difference.

The Westinghouse WGen7500 portable generator has a generous 6.6-gallon tank that allows it to run for up to 16 hours. It’s a small change that makes a big impact.

Electric Start

When dealing with a larger unit like the Westinghouse 7000 watt generator, having to fuss with a pull-start cord can become an increasingly difficult task. Beyond that, many larger generators are used for home power, meaning that automatic starting is an important feature.

This Westinghouse electric start generator makes sure that you’ll never have to strain to get power.

Transfer Switch Capable

Speaking of electric starting, the included transfer switch wiring of this western hemisphere generator will save you time and money if you ever need to use this generator for backup power.

Without any modifications or additional equipment, an electrician will be able to set up your home for backup power with this Westinghouse 7000 generator.

Wheel and Handle Kit

A wheel and handle kit is a helpful addition that many manufacturers will charge extra for. Not so with this Westinghouse 7500 watt generator. Every model sold includes a particularly sturdy set of wheels and a folding handle.

While the Westinghouse generator 7000 watt is too large to sling in the back of a truck single-handedly, the included wheels make it a much more manageable job to move it around your property or campsite.

Hour Meter

Maintenance is key to the longevity of any engine, and that includes oil changes, filter replacement, and spark plug service. Yet, the vast majority of generators do not provide you with a means of tracking the usage of the generator. Westinghouse thought of this with the western hemisphere generators.

Each Westinghouse generator 7000, and all other models in the range, includes an hour meter so you can easily track when you need to perform any maintenance. No more log books needed.

Low Oil Monitor

While we’re on the topic of oil, few things can harm an engine more quickly than running low on oil. By the very nature of a generator, it will commonly be running unattended. If an engine runs low on oil while someone isn’t around to notice, it may be too late by the time you find out. With the Westinghouse 7500 generator, you don’t need to worry.

Each generator has a low-oil switch which will automatically turn off the engine if low oil pressure is detected, protecting your investment from harm.

Technical Specifications

The primary selling point behind the Westinghouse generators 7500 watt model is the sheer capacity. Many smaller generators will lack the necessary wattage to run the demands of a modern RV or construction site. Generators typically have two ratings, “peak” and “continuous.”

The peak or “surge” rating is the amount of energy the generator can produce briefly to cope with starting loads, while the continuous rating is the amount that the generator can sustain.

A lot of manufacturers will purposefully mislead their customers by labeling a generator using the peak number, not the continuous. Westinghouse does not use those cheap tactics. The Westinghouse 7500 running watts portable generator can do just that: maintain 7500 watts. For peak loads, it can surge to 9,500 watts, so inductive draw from electric motors is no problem for this generator.

Running Watts: 7500Peak Watts: 9500
Fuel Tank Capacity: 6.6 gal.Push-Button Start: Yes
Run Time @ 25%: 16 hrs.Run Time @ 50%: 11 hrs.
Engine Displacement: 420ccEngine Type: OHV 4 Stroke
Low Oil Shutdown: AutomaticOil Capacity: 1.1 qt. (37.2 oz.)
Assembled Length: 27.2 in.Assembled Width: 26.1 in.
Assembled Height: 26 in.Dry Unit Weight: 192 lb.

Another common issue with less reputable generators is the engine itself. Many lower-end generators will have a gas engine that lacks the power necessary to properly power the generator head. The Westinghouse 7500 features a 420cc single-cylinder engine that produces plenty of torque to get the job done.

You’ll never have to worry about browning out your lights with this unit.

Pros and Cons of The Westinghouse WGen7500

This generator approaches perfection, but there are of course a few downsides that must be discussed. In short, the two drawbacks are simply size and weight. A generator of this capacity will naturally be larger, and this is no exception. While the unit is comparatively compact, its 192 lb heft means that this falls into the category of “team lift.” This is largely mitigated by the wheels, however.

Further, the noise of this model is a slight downside. For a 7,500 watt generator, it is rather quiet. But it still produces roughly 62db. While far from deafening, you won’t want to have a quiet conversation too close to this generator when it is running. While these are both considerations, it is difficult to blame Westinghouse. For a generator of this output, it is comparatively small and quiet. It is simply important to note the limitations inherent in a unit of this size.

Available Variations

One of the nicer aspects of the WGen model lineup is that Westinghouse produces a myriad of configurations based on this same basic design. Depending on your specific needs, there are WGen’s available from 5,500 to 9,500 watts.

The sizes, prices, and weights will vary according to the specific model, but the overall quality and design remain constant.

The Westinghouse WGen7500 is one of the most refined generators of this size I’ve ever reviewed. I had read Westinghouse WGen7500 reviews by other publications and the praise seemed almost unanimous, so I was excited to write my own Westinghouse WGen7500 review. I must say it did not disappoint.

I am used to generators of this size being loud and unruly machines that always lack the refinement of their smaller siblings. However, the WGen7500 bucks that trend. It has the power to run a large RV or home, but it remains efficient, quiet, and easy to use. For a well-equipped generator at a great price, I can safely recommend the WGen7500.
