Jackery has quickly become a leader in the market of high-quality but affordable solar generators. Their popular Explorer 160 and 240 models have become staples of campers and van-dwellers everyone. It is becoming increasingly common for people to rely entirely on the power stored by their solar generators.

Yet, for these heavier users, even the mighty Jackery Explorer 500 might not have the needed grunt to run an entire off-grid existence. Thus, many people were extremely excited by the release of the top-of-the-range Jackery Explorer 1000. With its 1kW capacity, high-capacity solar power is finally in reach of the average shopper.

Key Features

There is a lot to like about the Explorer 1000. Much like its smaller siblings, Jackery has provided an efficient and cost-effective product that supplies you with all of the needed features without any extraneous additions. Here are some of the features that stood out during our testing.

Extremely Affordable

Price is not normally the factor that we lead with. However, it is arguably the main advantage of this model. I want to be extremely clear that I am not saying that the Explorer 1000 is cheaply made or that it represents a compromised design. Quite the contrary. It is an incredibly complete and capable package for an impressively reasonable amount of money. Compared to the competing 1000 watt solar generator options, this Jackery can easily represent 50-60% savings.

This solar generator also represents a great deal when compared to assembling a system piece-by-piece. When many people embark on developing an off-grid system, their first instinct is to build a system themselves. While this may seem like a DIY means of saving money, the advantages don’t withstand scrutiny. By the time one has separately purchased comparable batteries, an inverter, a charge controller, and miscellaneous hardware, the cost easily surpasses the Jackery 1000. This unit not only represents convenience but savings as well.

Very High-Capacity Inverter

Many portable power stations focus on the capacity of the batteries without lending enough attention to the inverter. The inverter is what converts the battery power into usable 120VAC power, so having a compromised inverter can significantly hamper the usability of a system. The 1000 watt battery pack of this Jackery is impressive, but they coupled it with an inverter to match.

The Jackery uses a 1,000-watt pure-sine inverter with a 2,000-watt peak output. This means that this battery pack can serve as a serious alternative to small generators. Induction cooktops, televisions, lights, and even small air conditioning units are within the capabilities of this inverter. It is almost unbelievable that so much output could be fit into such a small package.

They didn’t skimp on the quality of the inverter either. Being a pure-sine model means that you won’t have to worry about powering sensitive electronics with this unit. If anything, the power will likely be more regulated than what you get at home.

Good Selection of Outlets

I am always amazed at the degree to which companies will neglect to put enough outlets on their solar generators. Ultimately, outlets are likely one of the cheapest components to improve on a power pack, so why would you overlook them? As you would expect, Jackery has met this challenge properly. Across the front panel of the Jackery are three 120VAC outlets, two USB, two USB Type-C, and a 12VDC cigarette port.

Admittedly, this arrangement is not perfect. While there is a quick-charge USB port, there is not a power delivery (PD) Type-C port. Thus, charging laptops will have to be done through the 120VAC circuit or a 12VDC car charger. However, the 12V outlet is regulated, which is an impressive detail. Many companies choose to wire their 12V outlets directly to the battery, meaning that the voltage decreases as the battery discharges. This can play havoc with many accessories. Jackery avoided this issue by installing a regulator on the outlet ensuring that it will provide a consistent and appropriate voltage.

Very Capable Solar Charge Controller

Another surprisingly premium feature of this unit is the solar charge controller. As with most portable power packs, the Explorer 1000 features a built-in solar charge controller for powering the unit through the optional solar panels. They did this right. First, the solar charge controller can support up to 200-watts of input, which is double the capacity of most units. This capacity allows you to attach two solar panels using an available adapter to greatly increase your charging speeds.

Beyond the capacity, the quality of the solar charge controller is top of the line. There are two types of controllers. Pulse Width Modulation charges, or PWM’s, are inexpensive but inefficient. Although PWM’s are by far the most common solution, they lose the majority of their power in partial sunlight conditions. Alternatively, Maximum Power Point Tracking chargers (MPPT) can modulate the input from the panels for the most efficient utilization. It’s a more expensive solution, but it is significantly more effective. Jackery went the extra mile by using an MPPT unit.

Light and Compact

For the amount of power that this unit can provide, it is impressively svelte. At only 22 lbs, you might not be backpacking with this power pack, but it is nonetheless extremely easy to transport. Whether you choose to use it for tailgating, emergency backup power, or for a more permanent off-grid system in a van or cabin, the space and weight efficiency offered by this model was impressive.

Since I bought my first Jackery product, an Explorer 160, I have been a consistent fan of Jackery products. The solar generator market is filled with gimmicks and sub-par quality, and so the refreshingly straight-forward and robust Jackery series is a welcome change. Anyone needed a compact and affordable all-in-one solution for off-grid power should give the Jackery Explorer 1000 serious consideration.

It offers the power you need to run almost any foreseeable device and it does so in a rugged and easy-to-use manner. Whether you choose to use it with solar panels or simply charge it from the grid, it is a reliable and incredibly useful piece of equipment.
